About Domaine Santa Duc Côtes-du-Rhône La Serre du Rieu

Yves Gras is one of those influential figures in the southern Rhône. Since taking over Domaine Santa Duc in 1985, he not only embraced organic viticulture long before it became fashionable but also played a pivotal role in putting Gigondas, in the Rhône, on the global wine map. Resolute in his beliefs and generous by nature, Yves has willingly shared his knowledge with young winemakers, guiding them in their early stages and helping them to flourish. His son, of course, was the first beneficiary.

Since 2017, he has been working alongside his son Benjamin, the first formally trained oenologist in the family, educated at the University of Burgundy and seasoned at esteemed estates such as Romanée-Conti and Vega Sicilia. With him, the estate transitioned entirely to biodynamics in 2016 and re-evaluated its range of wines to highlight local terroirs. Father and son share the same philosophy of minimal intervention and utmost respect for what nature offers.

Among their most distinctive gems is Domaine Santa Duc Côtes-du-Rhône La Serre du Rieu, a delicate and profoundly expressive white that originates from a mere 0.5-hectare plot in Roaix, at the foot of a small hill (serre, in Provençal), graced by the flow of the Rieu stream. Here, the calcareous sandy soils, shaped by the erosion of Miocene safre, impart a very particular minerality and elegance.

The dominant variety is clairette, accompanied by bourboulenc, sourced from vineyards with an average age of 50 years. Fermentation occurs in clay vessels and large used barrels, with daily bâtonnage, and an aging process of 10 months enhances texture without obscuring freshness. The wine is bottled without fining or filtration.
