About Domaine Weinbach Pinot Gris Cuvée Ste. Catherine

Cultivation in France is scarce. Legend has it that in 1565, Baron Lazare de Schwendi introduced various grapevines from Tokay—the Hungarian city renowned for its wines. In an attempt to emulate the celebrated sweet wines, it is said that the vintners of northern France aspired to replicate the esteemed Austrian varieties. The plants were transported directly to the town of Kientzheim, on the right bank of the Rhine River, where his castle still stands. Initially, the sweet wine project did not meet with the anticipated success. However, what did flourish was the pinot gris in Alsace.

Markedly distinct from its Italian cousin, pinot grigio, the pinot gris boasts one of the most aromatic profiles in all of Europe. Yet in this region, pinot gris only ripens when it reaches particularly high alcohol levels, but Alsatian winemakers have mastered its cultivation and have pinpointed its optimal expression. Among them is Domaine Weinbach. A prime example is their Domaine Weinbach Pinot Gris Cuvée Ste. Catherine.

For this estate, established in 1615 and having changed hands over the years, the pinot gris used to craft this white wine hails from two distinct vineyards. On one hand, the Clos des Capucins; on the other, the Grand Cru Schlossberg. While the latter is a hill known for the region's finest soils (its excellence has been acknowledged since the 15th century and it was the first terroir in Alsace to be classified as a grand cru), the former comprises about five hectares at the base of the slope. The sandy loam soils, with gravel, pebbles, granite, and a pronounced mineral character, are the foundation for the vineyards. The blend and composition of the soil vary depending on the altitude and location, but what both vineyards share is that their grapes ripen more swiftly due to the stones retaining heat.

Regarding the remainder of the process, the pinot gris from Domaine Weinbach Pinot Gris Cuvée Ste. Catherine is treated akin to a white wine. Harvesting is done by hand. Indeed, all vineyard care is conducted using biodynamic practices, which honor the integrity of both the vineyards and the surrounding ecosystem. Since 1998, the Faller family, the current proprietors of the winery, have implemented this cultivation method. This entails that all tasks are performed manually, including grape selection in the vineyard itself, as well as other cellar operations. Domaine Weinbach Pinot Gris Cuvée Ste. Catherine is pressed gently and gradually, without exerting excessive pressure. From there, the must is transferred to oak barrels where it will ferment with indigenous yeasts. Ultimately, Domaine Weinbach Pinot Gris Cuvée Ste. Catherine will undergo approximately ten months of aging in wooden foudres. And that's about it. Human intervention is minimized in the winemaking process (only when absolutely necessary).

Domaine Weinbach Pinot Gris Cuvée Ste. Catherine is bottled with natural cork stoppers and released to the market. We are confident that you have never experienced such an aromatic white wine. Truly among the finest in Europe!
