About Domaine Weinbach Riesling Cuvée Ste. Catherine Schlossberg Grand Cru

In 1978, an official regulation acknowledged the formation of a new organization in the Alsace region. After much debate and controversy, this renowned area in the north of France was finally regulated and structured (not without dispute) into 51 grands crus. This legislation is appreciated (indeed), but in some ways, it serves more the outsiders than the Alsatians themselves. Historically, the viticulturists of this region have not required any form of regulation to identify the premier vineyards nestled in the hills bordering the Vosges. Experience is a valuable teacher, or so they say. Specifically, since time immemorial, these territories have been recognized and praised for their exceptional quality. One such territory is the Grand Cru Schlossberg, situated in the heart of Alsace, the oldest in the area. According to historical documents, as far back as the 15th century, the Schlossberg wines were celebrated for their quality; even before the current legislation, producers had unanimously agreed on production limits to respect. As expected, the prominent wineries of the area seize the opportunity to be located here, and Domaine Weinbach is one of them with its Domaine Weinbach Riesling Cuvée Ste. The Domaine Weinbach Riesling Cuvée Ste. Catherine Schlossberg Grand Cru is a single-varietal white wine made from riesling, originating from mid-slope vineyards of this grand cru. This detail is significant as the altitude at which the vineyards are located determines the different types of soil. In the case of Domaine Weinbach Riesling Cuvée Ste. Catherine Schlossberg Grand Cru, the vineyards (over 30 years old) are situated halfway up, on steep terraces, with sandy and mineral-rich soils (abundant in potassium, magnesium, fluorine, and phosphorus) that are deeper than at the summit.

The harvest is done by hand, and the cellar work is minimally invasive. The wine is allowed to evolve naturally, and only if it strays from its intended path does it require the intervention of the winemaker. Domaine Weinbach Riesling Cuvée Ste. Catherine Schlossberg Grand Cru ferments in oak barrels and ages in these same vessels for fourteen months (during which time it remains in contact with its lees).
