About Domaine Weinbach Pinot Noir'S Grand Cru Schlossberg
While they have never sought to emulate the reds of Burgundy, it is undeniable that as a result of climate change, the vintners of Alsace have gradually adapted to conditions very similar to those of this central-eastern region of France. Clearly, this has a direct impact on the varietals, which are shifting in profile. Thus, varieties such as pinot noir—which initially struggled in this area—are beginning to carve out a niche among Alsatian wines. For now, this is the sole red variety permitted in the region. And if you wish to sample and become acquainted with it, allow us to recommend Domaine Weinbach Pinot Noir’s Grand Cru Schlossberg.
Calciferous soils are, in principle, ideal for pinot noir. These soils are prevalent in Grand Cru Schlossberg, one of the highest quality plots subdividing the vineyards of Alsace. To locate this area—acknowledged for its excellence since the 15th century—one must venture to the Kaysersberg valley. On a slope with a southern exposure lies this enclave with a porous base covered by conglomerate and sandstone. This geology allows for the accumulation of both heat and water, ensuring proper ripening in the cold winters and necessary hydration during the hot, dry summers. The Vosges act as a natural barrier that both protects and isolates the vineyards, intensifying the continental climate and fluctuating between extreme temperatures. This is highly beneficial, particularly for reds, as anthocyanins (polyphenols responsible for the grape's color) are deposited effectively when there is a significant contrast between daytime highs and nighttime lows.
Whether white or red, Domaine Weinbach will continue to employ its traditional wood-based production method in the cellar. It is important to note that the use of this material is a constant and a hallmark of the estate. Traditionally, not only have they utilized it, but other producers in the region have also relied on wood for their wine-making processes. Gradually, things are beginning to change and many are daring to experiment with stainless steel. However, that is not the case for Domaine Weinbach, where allegiance to wood prevails. Domaine Weinbach Pinot Noir’s Grand Cru Schlossberg undergoes fermentation with indigenous yeasts in oak barrels and is aged in these same vessels.
Always with their distinctive signature and proudly waving the flag of A.O.C. Alsace Grand Cru, Alsace's winemakers stand tall with their reds. Domaine Weinbach Pinot Noir S Schlossberg Grand Cru need not envy a fine Burgundy. Cheers!
| 2019 |
Domaine Weinbach Pinot Noir’S Grand Cru Schlossberg 2019 is a succulent, dry and opulent red. Olfactorily, it is intricate, exuding a robust spicy profile. On the palate, it is refined, vibrant and herbaceous, with a substantial structure and coarse tannins. It culminates in an extensive, mineral finish.
