About Donovan Rall Syrah

The term garagista is no coincidence. It originates from the French "garagiste" and describes small-scale, almost nomadic producers who craft wines in minimal facilities—sometimes literally in a garage—and who focus on limited productions, distinctive style, and extensive manual labour.

If anyone embodies the image of the garagiste winemaker, it is Donovan Rall. Difficult to categorise, without a website or social media presence, Rall made his name by travelling thousands of kilometres across the Western Cape in search of the finest grapes and vineyards. His secret is an artisanal approach, obsessive about raw materials and utterly independent. This involves selecting vineyards plot by plot, in collaboration with local viticulturists, to obtain the purest and most expressive fruit.

However, over the years, Donovan has evolved. Today, he has an established winery in Riebeek Kasteel, in Swartland (Coastal Region), with resources that allow him to perfect every aspect of winemaking. Yet his independent spirit remains intact, and this is reflected in his syrah, a wine that blends tradition, passion, and technique.

This syrah comes from ten hectares of vineyards planted on very rocky schist soils. Fermentation occurs naturally, with fifty percent whole clusters, and the wine ages for 10 months in concrete tanks. The result is a syrah that maintains exceptional freshness while achieving roundness and balance, with that Mediterranean character that so distinguishes Rall wines.
