About El Burro Malbec

Having a child might be one of life’s greatest experiences; perhaps one of the most special. Being a father is a very important thing; and José Zuccardi has become a father three times. With the aim of leaving a record of this, the youngest of the three, Julia, has had the businessman and winemaker’s new project named after her. This is how the Santa Julia winery was born.

In 1996, when this project was set up, Julia Zuccardi was only 12 years old. At that time Santa Julia was still a very small winery, but its values and principles of quality, innovation and sustainability were well defined. Today, thanks to this philosophy, Santa Julia, which has grown up with its namesake, can boast of being one of the most renowned wineries in the country where they make natural and vegan wines like El Burro Malbec.

Today, to speak of the Zuccardi family is to speak of one of the most important and well-known names in the world of wine. Despite this, as Julia Zuccardi explained in an interview, the family maintains a rather simple lifestyle. This simplicity is reflected in the wine, where the pillar of quality has been achieved in 300 hectares of organic vineyards, where sustainable and environmentally friendly cultivation is always sought, and where every detail is taken care of: from the level of grape ripeness, to the quality of life and well-being of the workers. In fact, this latter aspect is very important to the company, which is always keen to develop educational and wellbeing programmes for the communities and families working at the winery. The first person to take care of the people was Emma, Julia Zuccardi’s grandmother, who was always very clear that the wine, as the artisan product it is, bears the imprint of its workers.

Their El Burro Malbec is grown on 180 hectares of land located in Maipú, at an altitude of 650 metres above sea level, where the grapes are grown completely free of pesticides and chemicals. This estate, 40 km from Mendoza, is characterised by being a warm area, with good climate conditions, where the grapes ripen faster than the other plots. For this reason, El Burro Malbec is one of the first to be harvested and processed. Once in the winery, El Burro Malbec ferments spontaneously using native yeasts and macerates for 15 days. This process, which uses minimal intervention, avoids sulphites and chemical products. This assumes that El Burro Malbec is bottled unfiltered and unclarified.

In Santa Julia, the Zuccardi family has been facing a great variety of soils and styles for years, and they have always strived to get the best as well as continuing to research. This innovation is part of the family DNA. It should not be forgotten that the grandfather, engineer Tito Zuccardi, arrived in Mendoza with no idea how a vineyard worked. He learned everything little by little. And this is the path the family is still following today, where they continue to search for the best version of Mendoza, convinced that Argentine winemaking has no limits.

El Burro Malbec 2022 is a red wine that exudes youth and vibrancy. On the nose, it unfurls a spectrum of aromas from red and black fruits, such as cherries, blackberries, and plums, heralding a flavor burst. Upon tasting, its fruity essence is affirmed, revealing a succulent and approachable texture that beckons one to continue savoring. Its palate presence is delightful and lighthearted, making it an effortlessly enjoyable wine at any given time.

El Burro Malbec 2021 is a juicy red wine that is very intense in colour with violet tones. The nose is very typical of the variety, with fruity aromas (cherry, plums, blackcurrants). The palate is powerful, full-bodied and structured. Very deep. Fine tannins and bright acidity. Pleasant finish with hints of plum jam.
