About El Enemigo Malbec

In many cases we are our own worst enemy. And this phrase is what inspired El Enemigo, a collection of wines that highlights the power of a terroir in Mendoza (Argentina) that until recently has not had the recognition it deserves. Bodega Aleanna was set up by historian Adrianna Catena (daughter of Argentine wine promoter Nicolás Catena Zapata) and the prestigious winemaker Alejandor Vigil (chief winemaker of Catena Zapata), with the aim of vindicating wine culture through authenticity, history and traditions. To do this, they champion minimum intervention and maximum expression of the terroir.

And what better way to delve into the origins than by creating El Enemigo Malbec, a red wine made mainly with Argentina’s star variety and the favourite grape of this enterprising winemaker (so much so that he even has the name of it tattooed on his forearm). A Malbec accompanied by a small amount of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, the three varieties are grown in vineyards located in Gualtallary (Tupungato) at an altitude of approximately 1,470 metres above sea level. Respectful agriculture is practiced and yields are limited. Once they reach the winery, half of the grapes are destemmed and the rest are left in full bunches. Fermentation takes place spontaneously with native yeasts and no temperature control. Finally, the wine is aged in second and third use French oak barrels for 15 months.

El Enemigo Malbec was born through the search for the perfect combination of wood and fruit. This is a meaty, lively and elegant wine that delights us with its great transparency and reveals the great potential hidden behind the new Argentina. An Argentina that celebrates what it has and holds onto it tightly to offer us beautiful creations like this one.
