About El Grifo Malvasía Brut Nature

As the saying goes, "every cloud has a silver lining." Indeed, many wine discoveries have been the result of accidents. Rosé champagne initially was a flawed sparkling wine that had spent too much time in contact with its skins. Noble rot was an invasive fungus that appeared by chance on grapes when the harvest was overdue. Today, these two "accidents" are responsible for some exceptional sparkling and sweet wines. Similarly, in Lanzarote, in the Canary Islands (Spain), the proprietors of the El Grifo winery were taken aback in 1986 when a batch of wine bottles underwent refermentation and the corks began to pop. Yet, what seemed a disaster turned out to be a revelation as they realised that malvasía is a variety well-suited to sparkling wines, and three years later, they embarked on producing their first wine using the méthode champenoise.

El Grifo Malvasía Brut Nature is quite a rarity from the Canary Islands, where there is no tradition of making sparkling wines. It originates from pre-phylloxera vines of the native malvasía variety, aged between 40-60 years, planted on volcanic soil. Specifically, the vines are rooted in what locals call "chabocos," small pits or circular depressions constructed in the earth to shield the vines from wind and erosion. The cultivation is respectful and the harvest early, and once in the winery, the base wine is first produced, remaining on the lees for a minimum of 9 months, followed by a second fermentation in the bottle, adhering to the Traditional Method. Finally, after ageing on the lees for at least 5 years, manual disgorging is performed without dosage.

Made from a single vintage and with the island's signature variety from volcanic Lanzarote, El Grifo Malvasía Brut Nature is a most distinctive sparkling wine. A true island rarity that, like other great wine triumphs, was born out of serendipity. Hard to resist.
