About El Grifo Moscatel de Ana

There are few wineries as old as El Grifo that, throughout its 248 years of life, have belonged to only three families. In fact, it is the oldest winery in the Canary Islands and the 5th oldest in Spain. So it is not surprising that some of its wines are a tribute to figures who have marked a before and after in the winery. In the case of El Grifo Moscatel de Ana , it is a sweet wine named after Ana Brito, daughter of one of the hard-working families who has helped the García Durán family to successfully run the winery. Ana was born in El Grifo in 1880 and the great-grandfather of the current owners named the wine of that vintage as ‘El vino de Ana,’ being today the oldest solera of the winery. This is actually the winery's first oxidative-aged muscat.

El Grifo Moscatel de Ana is a sweet wine made with the Muscat of Alexandria variety from the oldest vines of the house. Pre-phylloxera vines between 100–150 years old are planted in volcanic soil. A lunar landscape in which the vines are grown in holes called "chabocos" to protect the plant from wind and heat. Once the grapes are harvested, they are shrivelled to a raisin-like state and then macerated with the skins. Fermentation is carried out with native yeasts and is halted by the addition of wine alcohol with 95 g/L of natural sugars. It then undergoes a long oxidative ageing in soleras from 1880. One hundred years later, in 1981, the commercialisation of El Grifo Moscatel de Ana began.

Being the only winery in the islands that maintains this task as they did in the past, El Grifo Moscatel de Ana is a naturally sweet wine from pre-phylloxera vines whose name Ana acts as a tribute to all those families who have contributed with their work to build the success of the winery. A sweet reward.
