About El Grifo Tinto Ariana

El Grifo Tinto Ariana is a red wine crafted by Bodegas El Grifo in San Bartolomé, D.O. Lanzarote.

Bodegas El Grifo, established in 1775 by the ancestors of the Otamendi Rodríguez-Bethencourt family, is the oldest winery in the Canary Islands and one of the ten oldest in Spain.

All the vineyards of El Grifo are pre-phylloxera, planted on volcanic ash soils sheltered from the trade winds that blow in the region by traditional stone walls built around them to protect the vines. Due to its location and climate, the dormant period must be induced by pruning in February. For El Grifo Tinto Ariana, the grapes come from the El Grifo estate, spanning 61.5 hectares, where the vineyard is tended manually due to the rugged terrain. El Grifo Tinto Ariana is a wine made from Listán Negro and Syrah.

The production of El Grifo Tinto Ariana begins with manual harvesting in 20kg boxes, with manual selection in the vineyard. Once at the winery, after a pre-fermentation maceration, the two varieties of El Grifo Tinto Ariana are vinified separately in stainless steel tanks with continuous pump-overs to enhance extraction. After the completion of alcoholic fermentation, El Grifo Tinto Ariana is blended and transferred to French oak barrels where it undergoes malolactic fermentation and several months of barrel ageing. Finally, El Grifo Tinto Ariana is bottled and left to rest for less than a year in the bottle.

On the palate, it has a sweet entrance that is well balanced by its freshness. A long and persistent wine with ripe tannins and an Atlantic character.
2019 El Grifo Tinto Ariana 2019 is a red wine that, on the nose, presents aromas reminiscent of blackcurrants and raspberries, complemented by toasted nuances akin to toffee sweets and balsamic hints that contribute a refreshing quality.
