About Entre Vinyes Oníric Sota Terra

In the study of mythology, the term "underworld" is a generic notion referring to the realm believed to be the final abode of the souls of the deceased. The most prevalent conception depicts it as a place nestled deep within the bowels of the Earth, which has shaped artistic portrayals of this realm across various cultures and traditions. However, in the lexicon of Entre Vinyes, the venture established by Maria Barrena (a member of Azul y Garanza) and her partner Josep Tort in the Baix Penedès (Catalonia), the underworld is where geology, archaeology, and biology patiently await. In their own words, “understanding what lies beneath the vine is what most inspires us and what imparts personality and distinction to each of our wines”. These characteristics, though not immediately apparent, reveal through the wine the most intimate aspects of nature.

Embracing this concept of the “subterranean”, they introduce Entre Vinyes Oníric Sota Terra, an orange wine crafted from the macabeo grape variety. Ancient vines aged between 80 and 100 years are planted in the Foix Natural Park and cultivated using regenerative agriculture with exceedingly low yields. The harvest is carried out manually and selectively, and once in the winery, the grapes spontaneously ferment with indigenous yeasts, spending several days in contact with the skins. Subsequently, the wine matures over a period of 3 months in clay amphorae buried underground amidst the vine rows.

The dedication of Maria and Josep to unravel the enigmas that lie beneath the vines, those forces that animate each bud and cluster, is what endows their project with a distinct personality and distinction. With Entre Vinyes Oníric Sota Terra, a wine quite literally crafted beneath the surface, we delve into the depths of the soil and explore the intimate essence of nature that has inspired this exceptional wine.
