The term “artisanal” has been so frequently employed in the wine industry that it sometimes seems devoid of meaning. However, occasionally a project emerges that reminds you of its true essence. Eve and Michel Rey exemplify such a case. Two individuals, four hands, and an unwavering commitment to the vineyard, the wine, and the time necessary to do things properly.

Since settling in Vergisson in 1988, at the very heart of the Mâconnais in Burgundy (France), they have meticulously crafted their small universe, acquiring modest plots in the finest locations of La Roche, where chardonnay achieves an almost mineral purity. With no rush, no noise, and no excess.

They handle everything themselves: pruning, harvesting, pressing, ageing. There is no external labour or technological shortcuts. They ferment with indigenous yeasts, mature their wines in French oak (only 10 to 20% new), and bottle without fining or filtering. It is not just a philosophy; it is a way of life.

Their Pouilly-Fuissé Les Crays perfectly embodies this philosophy. It originates from the highest slopes of La Roche de Vergisson, south-facing, on limestone and stony soils that impart character and tension. The result is a vibrant, profound, and sincere chardonnay, a wine that speaks of the landscape and the hands that made it possible.

For when a wine is truly artisanal, it doesn't need to proclaim it. It is felt.
