Occasionally, remarkable tales do not emerge from a leap into the unknown, but rather from a natural evolution. The story of Eve and Michel Rey began in 1988 when they chose to settle in Vergisson, a quaint and picturesque village nestled between the rocks of Vergisson and Solutré, in the heart of the Mâconnais region of Burgundy. Together, they shaped their dream of crafting wines that embody the purity and vitality of this unique landscape.
Without inheritances or vast tracts of land, they acquired small plots, one by one, always with a clear vision: to work with utmost respect for nature and allow the terroir to express itself without interference. Today, their winery is modest, but each bottle is a statement of principles.
Their Pouilly-Fuissé Sur la Roche 1er Cru originates from the highest slopes of the Roche de Vergisson, where the limestone soils impart an unmistakable tension and depth to the chardonnay. They abstain from using pesticides or insecticides; they cultivate the land throughout the year and harvest by hand, with the care of those who know each vine intimately.
The grapes are gently pressed whole in a pneumatic press, ferment with indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, and the wine is aged for 10 months in predominantly used French oak barrels. It is bottled unfiltered with a minimal dose of sulphur.
The result is a vibrant and sincere chardonnay, brimming with balance, purity, and texture. A wine that does not seek to impress, but to move, reminding us that true luxury remains in doing things well, by hand and with heart. With Eve & Michel Rey Sur la Roche 1er Cru, the word 'artisanal' regains its most genuine meaning.
