About Feudi de San Gregorio Taurasi

That Feudi di San Gregorio Taurasi is among the most outstanding red wines of the Italian peninsula is not just our opinion. The high quality and renown of this wine—cultivated on the hills of the city of Taurasi (in the province of Avellino)—have also been acknowledged by numerous connoisseurs throughout history.

It's evident that we haven't stumbled upon anything new, yet we do recommend paying close attention to the D.O.C.G. Taurasi where the most celebrated and esteemed wines of Campania are produced. For a period, this region, which has always presented exceptionally favorable conditions for vine cultivation, experienced a decline in its wine production to almost negligible levels (the arduous task of working on mountain slopes may be one of the reasons); however, it now appears that the wines of Campania have made a robust comeback thanks to a new generation of vintners. Among them is Feudi di San Gregorio, creators of the red Feudi di San Gregorio Taurasi.

Currently, this winery is situated in the town of Sorbo Serpico, and from there, they aim to pen the new chapters of the region's history (while never forgetting its past). Like a mighty tree that must sink its roots deep to soar high, Feudi di San Gregorio relies on the ancient traditions and knowledge of the area. That is why they prefer to speak of Irpina (the ancient name by which this province was known). In this region, already mentioned in the texts of Pliny, Columella, and Strabo, volcanic soils are found. The area is bisected by the Calore river, with the northern left bank featuring much more clay-rich soil. What is consistent on both sides, however, are the humid winters and hot, dry summers, creating a climate of stark contrasts that enable the proper ripening of red grapes (in this case, the aglianico). Notably, the D.O.C.G Taurasi has been dubbed 'The Barolo of the South' due to the high quality of its red wines (bearing resemblance to those from the north).

After the harvest, the grapes are delivered to the winery and processed and vatted in stainless steel tanks where they ferment. However, the secret to Feudi di San Gregorio Taurasi lies in its maturation process. Feudi di San Gregorio Taurasi, like all red wines aspiring to be released under the D.O.C.G. Taurasi denomination, must be aged for a minimum of one year in oak barrels (some producers opt for an additional year of bottle aging). This is the case with Feudi di San Gregorio Taurasi, which will rest in the cellar for a period before being introduced to the rest of the world.
