About Flor de Pingus

Customarily, and more often than one might expect, it is said that Flor de Pingus is the junior member of the house, the second wine of Pingus. Nothing could be further from the truth! Flor de Pingus is a remarkable red, with its own distinct character, that has ample reason to stand out far from the shadow of Pingus and be regarded as a noteworthy wine in its own right.

Although less exclusive in quantity, this does not diminish its quality; Flor de Pingus is a wine no enthusiast should miss. At least once in a lifetime, one should seize the opportunity to taste this DO Ribera del Duero, crafted from old vines in the La Horra area, in the northern part of the denomination, where its creator, Peter Sisseck, has laid down roots. What began in 1990 as a temporary role as an advisor for Hacienda Monasterio has transformed into a passionate and devoted relationship with the terroir of this denomination, where Sisseck has managed to extract and harness the best. Thirty years ago, upon his arrival, the local farmers merely grew grapes to sell to wineries. However, with Sisseck as a trailblazer, everything changed, showcasing a new approach - with biodynamics at the forefront - where the winemaker was involved in every stage of production: from cultivation in the field to bottling. More than a few heads were turned in the DO Ribera del Duero

Flor de Pingus originates from old vines, over 50 years old, thriving on clay and limestone soils. The summer drought and frosts typical of the continental climate bring out the best in each cluster, yielding well-ripened grapes with the perfect balance of sugar and acidity. Naturally, the harvest of Flor de Pingus is done by hand, and each of the hectares (28 in total) is processed and fermented separately, in different tanks, until the time of assemblage. However, before this, Flor de Pingus will undergo at least a year and a half of ageing in French oak barrels, prior to bottling.

The production of Flor de Pingus is somewhat higher than that of Pingus (hence its lower price). However, this doesn't mean you should delay. The bottles of Flor de Pingus disappear quickly! So, let's end the explanation here. While you finish reading this text, someone might be depleting our reserves of Flor de Pingus. Don't let any slip through your fingers!

2020

Flor de Pingus 2020 is a red wine that offers a pleasant complexity on the nose with ripe fruit aromas accompanied by notes of leather, subtle smoky nuances and balsamic touches, with very well-integrated oak. On the palate it is a delight. Powerful, yet elegant, it runs over the palate full of fruit, nuanced by the finesse of its sweet tannins, with a perfect volume that gives way to a tasty and eternal aftertaste. A great wine from Peter Sisseck.

2017 The 2017 vintage has been characterized as being hot and dry. Low water reserves at the start became more severe during the months of July and August, when conditions were extremely dry except for some heavy rains towards the beginning of the harvest. But without a doubt the defining moment of the year was the frost that affected much of Ribera del Duero on April 28 immediately following budding, resulting in weak plant mass. This affected plant growth and flowering for the entire year resulting in production losses between 70 and 80%. This devastation was followed by some very hot months in June and July. Because of these issues, the grapes of this vintage have been smaller in size. Peter Sisseck described it as, “an early harvest characterized by ripe aromas, great extract and low acidity.” Due to the heavy frost that occurred in Ribera de Duero, they’ve had to seek out new areas in the DO, such as Burgos and Soria, for the production of PSI.
2016

Flor de Pingus 2016 is a mature red wine brimming with intense aromas of ripe red fruit, floral undertones, and nuances of toasted oak and balsamic. On the palate, it is flavorsome, intricate, and exceedingly refined. This indulgent wine boasts excellent acidity and well-integrated noble tannins. The finish is subtly dry, leaving a delightful impression of cocoa and spiced notes.

2010 A surprising attack, bulky but with a sweet touch. This red wine has soft tannins and a rich texture which is very pleasing to the palate. Long and juicy finish.

Picota cherry colour with violet tones. Dense and rounded tears show on the glass.

Fragrant and intense nose. The good ripening and selection of the grapes is felt. Aromas of very ripe red and black fruit and floral shades. Later aromas from its ageing emerge, toasted and balsamic notes, eucalyptus and some smoky/burnt touches like coffee and cocoa. Sweet spices and a vegetal touch.
