About Gaia Agiorgitiko by Gaia

Put forward by English scientist James Lovelock in 1969, the Gaia theory states that the earth is alive and seems to regulate itself following the integration of all living beings as a giant multicellular organism. But it wasn’t him who suggested the name “Gaia” for his theory, that came from one of his closest friends, writer William Golding, inspired by the ancient Greek goddess of the Earth. This same name was used in 1994 by Greek winemakers Leon Karatsalos and Yiannis Paraskevopoulos to set up their own winery. A wine project where the main objective is to showcase the potential of native Greek grape varieties in line with the integration of all the components of nature. Operating in two different wineries, one in Nemea and one in Santorini, Gaia Estate has become the reference in modern Greek wine.

Gaia Agiorgitiko by Gaia is a wine made from the native Agiorgitiko grape variety grown in a private vineyard in Koutsi, Nemea, at an altitude of 550 metres. These are old vines planted on hill slopes on shallow clay soil. Terroirs that drain fairly well but are exposed to erosion. The grapes are harvested by hand, destemmed and crushed, followed by cold maceration for approximately 48 hours at 10°C (50°F). Fermentation is carried out with native yeasts for approximately two weeks at temperatures between 22 and 26°C, with periodic pumping over and some racking. Malolactic fermentation continues with a 12-month aging in oak barrels, 90% of which is French oak (10% new) and 10% American oak (10% new).

Classically made but with an innovative spirit, Gaia Agiorgitiko by Gaia is a modern Greek red wine that is making waves. A single-variety wine that tells stories of the land where it comes from and is made and where the grape, which is the most cultivated in Greece, shows its true colours: power.

2020

Gaia Agiorgitiko by Gaia 2020 is a concentrated red wine with aromas of ripe red fruits, oak notes and spicy hints of white pepper. On the palate it is juicy, fresh and refined. A velvety wine with a solid entrance, elegant tannins and good acidity through to the finish.
