About Gaja Barolo Dagromis

The word ‘revolution’ often comes up when people mention the wines of the DOCG Barolo, the pride of the Langhe region, in the Italian Piedmont, and the best expression of the native Nebbiolo grape. It all started with the ‘Barolo boys’, a documentary that came out in 2014 about a group of young winemakers (later called the Barolo Boys) who drastically changed the world of Barolo in the 1980s and 1990s and came into conflict with hard-line traditionalist winemakers. Practices like late harvesting, long extractions and endless aging began to be questioned and a new winemaking story started that has made Barolo one of the best red wines in the world.

Although the Gaja family, with their winery founded in the Langhe hills in 1859, stays away from this modernist versus traditionalist debate in favour of quality, the truth is that when Angelo Gaja, great-grandson of the founder, joined the project, he broke away from the old production methods and transformed the winery into one of the most modern Italian wine groups with the greatest international reputation. His Gaja Barolo Dagromis wine comes from one of the most reputable vineyards bought from the Gromis family, hence the name of the wine. These are old vines planted on calcareous clay and marl soils, 400 metres above sea level. They are respectfully cultivated without the use of chemical products. In the winery, the grapes ferment with the skins in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature and the process ends with a 12-month aging in barrels followed by a further 18 months in large oak casks.

Gaja Barolo Dagromis is made in homage to the family that cultivated this sought-after plot before it was sold. A pure, elegant and concentrated expression of the terroir that is extremely high quality and therefore great for aging.

2017

Gaja Barolo Dagromis 2017 is a concentrated red wine that exudes rich aromas of ripe red fruits, notes of red flowers and balsamic hints. On the palate it is smooth, warm and deep. A balanced wine with noticeable acidity and velvety tannins. The finish is very lingering and persistent.
