About Azul y Garanza Garciano
We are all familiar with "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland", Lewis Carroll's most celebrated work, which narrates how a young girl named Alice tumbles down a rabbit hole into an underground realm brimming with peculiar creatures and nonsensical scenarios. Not as renowned is "Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There", the sequel to the initial tale, distinguished for its surreal narrative style and inventive use of language. Memorable and outlandish characters, such as the Mad Hatter, the March Hare, the Red Queen, and the White Queen, are introduced with linguistic flair, incorporating neologisms, wordplay, and parodies of contemporary poems and popular songs. It is within this literary milieu that the term "portmanteau" was coined, a linguistic construct stemming from the French and originally denoting a specific type of suitcase that opens into two separate compartments. Carroll metaphorically employed the term "portmanteau" to describe the fusion of two words into one, giving rise to the concept of a "portmanteau word" to signify such linguistic amalgamations. In a similar vein of creativity, Azul y Garanza, a venture conceived by María, Fer, and Dani in the Bardenas Reales desert of Navarra, Spain, introduces Garciano, a wine that, as its name suggests, is crafted from two indigenous grape varieties of the region: Garnacha and Graciano. A perfect blend that ignites the imagination and beckons us to delve into a world of distinctive and unique flavors.
In the production of Azul y Garanza Garciano, this trio staunchly commits to regenerative agriculture. This agricultural approach aims to restore and enhance ecosystem health while simultaneously fostering soil resilience, biodiversity, and long-term productivity. The vineyards, located northwest of the Bardenas Reales and marked by an arid climate, average 25 years of age and are rooted in clay-limestone soil. Following manual harvesting, the winemaking process begins with fermentation using indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks. Subsequently, the wine matures for 6 months in French oak barrels.
In conclusion, Azul y Garanza Garciano not only arouses the imagination and invites us to explore a realm of unique flavors but also embodies a steadfast commitment to sustainability and the regeneration of the agricultural landscape. A genuine "portmanteau" that presents the best of both varietals from the D.O. Navarra.
| 2021 | Azul y Garanza Garciano 2021 is a succulent wine that masterfully blends the vivacity of Graciano with the opulent fruitiness of Garnacha, authentically embodying the distinctive traits of the Navarra region. Its profile is distinguished by a pronounced fruitiness, with discernible notes of cherries, blackberries, and raspberries, augmented by a delightful hint of anise. Moreover, this wine is characterized by its balanced acidity and finely structured tannins, delivering a comprehensive and rewarding sensory experience. |
