About Gil Pejenaute Las Paradas

If we’re talking about revival in the Spanish wine industry, we have to look to Aragon, which for years has been looking to the future without ever losing sight of tradition and history. All of this takes on a special meaning in the D.O. Campo de Borja, in the northwest of the area, where most growers are cultivating old vineyards aged over 30 years old. The winegrowers there know that they have real treasures in their hands, vines over 40 years old, oenological wonders where they strive to bring out the full potential of this land. One of these growers is the couple Javier Gil and his wife Cristina, who have fully embarked on Gil Pejenaute Las Paradas, a new project with which this winemaker seeks to elaborate his dream wine from old recovered vineyards.

His Gil Pejenaute Las Paradas is a single-variety wine made from Grenache grapes grown in old vineyards in Tabuenca.

After 25 years working in La Rioja Javier Gil looks back at this small corner of the province of Zaragoza where he can make a great red, which uses little energy and bears the name of Aragon to the great tables of the world. For this, its base of operations will be 1.2 hectares of old vineyards that grow on slate soil that were about to disappear, and that Javier Gil has recovered with great enthusiasm working them in a respectful way, way of the ecological. Finally, and with a lot of work, this dream is fulfilled with Gil Pejenaute Las Paradas.

Gil Pejenaute Las Paradas is fermented in 500-litre oak barrels with native yeasts. It rests here for 18 months in a natural cave, where the temperature is kept at a constant 13°C. After that, this red wine is bottled without filtering or clarifying. And that’s about it. Javier Gil doesn’t need much more to be able to show all that he is capable of doing on this land with Grenache.

2019

Gil Pejenaute Las Paradas 2019 emerges as a red wine that captivates with its harmony and vivacity. On the nose, it unfurls scents of red fruits such as strawberries and cherries, interwoven with a hint of gentle spices. On the palate, its supple nature and light body render it effortlessly quaffable, with a maturity that is unobtrusive and a delicate spiciness that lingers pleasingly. It is the quintessential choice for those seeking an uncomplicated red wine experience with understated elegance.

2018

Gil Pejenaute Las Paradas 2018 is a smooth, very elegant and aromatic wine with a translucent ruby colour. The nose is very complex, with aromas of Mediterranean forest plants (rockrose, juniper) mixed with notes of slate and humidity. The palate is long and round, vibrant and fresh, with grainy tannins. Fruity and spicy. Very fine.
