About Gran Chobeo de Peciña

Prayer and the vineyard are good friends. The church has always been connected to wine production. Given that the Eucharist uses wines to symbolise the blood of Christ and that drinking this wine brings salvation, there are many Catholic saints with a link to wine. One of them, St. Vincent, is always represented with a bunch of red grapes and a pruning shear in his hand. The patron saint of winegrowers, he is highly venerated in Burgundy and also in several parts of Spain. So much so that there are even towns named after him. This is the case of San Vicente de Sonsierra, a town in La Rioja Alta (Spain), which lies at the foot of the Toloño mountain range and can boast of being part of the area that produces the best wines of the DOCa Rioja. It is here, in the old part of the village, where Pedro Peciña Crespo and his three sons set up a small winery in 1992 under the name of Hermanos Peciña. This project went so well that in 1997 he set up a new facility on the outskirts of the village to age his wines. And although the winery doesn’t have a long past, it is known all over the world, especially in the USA, for creating wines with a classic style and Rioja tradition.

With 50 hectares of their own vineyards and a fleet of 4,500 American oak barrels, Hermanos Peciña produces wines like this Gran Chobeo de Peciña, a single-variety wine made with the area’s queen variety, the Tempranillo, from vineyards over 40 years old. After an exhaustive work in the vineyard, the grapes are harvested by hand in 15 kg boxes and then, in the winery, the grapes are selected on a sorting table and destemmed, keeping the grapes whole for semi-carbonic maceration. Fermentation lasts approximately 15 days, followed by maceration for about 20 days. The wine is then aged in new American oak barrels for 9 months, with manual racking every 3 months. Finally, the wine is bottled, where it is rounded off before being released for sale.

Made in one of the most emblematic places in the DOCa Rioja, Gran Chobeo de Peciña has everything it needs to be a flagship of its people. A signature red wine with a classic style whose unctuousness and persistence can only be the work of a saint.
