About Josep Grau Regina

They say that behind every great man, there is a great woman. In the case of Josep Grau, that woman was the spark that ignited the creation of Regina. During a trip to Champagne, she tasted some elegant rosés and remarked, "Why don't you make one too?" That simple phrase kindled the idea of crafting a wine with character, freshness, directness, and abundant personality.

It all began when Josep decided to change his life. He had a job, money, and comfort as a stockbroker in Barcelona, but he desired something else: wine in his hands, vineyards beneath his feet, and to dedicate himself to his true passion. So, he slammed the door on that chapter and returned to his roots in Montsant, where he started learning the trade from scratch.

For over 7 years, he worked in various wineries in the region, absorbing all the knowledge about vineyards, soils, and fermentations. In 2003, he purchased his first vineyard in the village of Capçanes and, with a discerning eye, acquired a historic 17th-century property in Gratallops with its century-old cellars. Today, he manages around 36 hectares across Marçà, Capçanes, and Falset: a mosaic of plots with distinct terroirs, but with a common goal: to produce authentic wines, without artifice, that speak for themselves.

Regina is crafted from garnacha tinta and garnacha blanca, sourced from Finca Les Comes, half a hectare of vineyard with vines approximately 50 years old. The soils consist of slate and limestone on the upper terraces and silt and sand on the lower ones, all cultivated organically.

The harvest is manual, the fermentation spontaneous in 600-litre Austrian Stockinger oak barrels with indigenous yeasts, and the wine rests for 7 months on its lees, gaining texture, character, and that minerality that reflects the essence of well-tended old vines.

Josep does not make wine to impress or follow trends. Regina is the perfect example. A wine inspired by his wife, direct, elegant, full of fruit, and capable of clearly conveying the story of its origin.

Josep Grau Regina 2023 reveals itself with a captivating pale pink hue. Upon approaching the nose, it transports with a symphony of fresh red fruits, such as strawberries and raspberries, interwoven with vibrant citrus notes and refined nuances of white wildflowers. On the palate, it astonishes with its silky and enveloping texture. Its body is firm yet not heavy, and the balanced acidity enhances its freshness.
