About Joseph Drouhin Gevrey-Chambertin

Joseph Drouhin Gevrey-Chambertin is a monovarietal Pinot Noir red wine from the AOC Gevrey-Chambertin produced by Joseph Drouhin.

Joseph Drouhin is a winery founded in the late nineteenth century and located in Beaune, in Burgundy. It has 78 hectares of vineyards spread across several sub-areas of the territory: in Côte de Nuits, Chablis, Côte de Beaune and Côte Chalonnaise. It also buys grapes and must from local producers. For years the winery has been practicing organic farming because it understands that listening and respecting its vineyards and nature is the right way to make great wines.

The vineyards for Joseph Drouhin Gevrey-Chambertin are located in the north of Côte de Nuits, in Gevrey-Chambertin. The soils of the plots are lean and calcareous, with a layer of reddish-brown colour from loamy marls. The planting density is very high, 10,000 plants per hectare, and the vines are pruned in Guyot style, to ensure that each vine produces few grapes, but ones that are balanced and concentrated. The average yield is 44hl/ha. In the municipality of Gevrey there is a famous vineyard classified as Grand Cru, but its other vineyards also enjoy a unique terroir.

Joseph Drouhin Gevrey-Chambertin macerates and ferments with the skins at a controlled temperature for about 2-3 weeks. It ferments with native yeasts and is then aged in French oak barrels for a period of 14 to 18 months.

Joseph Drouhin Gevrey-Chambertin is a complex and lingering red in an area that has a number of fantastic Pinot Noirs.
2016 Joseph Drouhin Gevrey-Chambertin 2016 has aromas of cherry, wild berries and licorice. It has a subtle woody character that combines delicately with other aromas. As the wine opens up, complex notes of soft spices, nutmeg and leather appear. Even later, mushrooms and nuances of moist earth appear. On the palate it is velvety. The tannin is present but not astringent, and is harmonically balanced by acidity and glycerin. The same aromas perceived in the nose also appear on the palate in the aftertaste.
