About Kamara Shadow Play Red

Since the early 2000s, when Dimitrios Kioutsoukis planted his 11 hectares of vineyards, he was always very clear about one thing: the production of his wines would always be natural, avoiding those musts with sulphites in the vineyard and hundreds of chemical interventions. Apparently he felt like Karagiozis, a popular Greek character from a shadow play (the protagonist of many stories), who with his picaresque and cunning ways was always against the rich conquerors who were responsible for the deterioration of Greece. In his case, Dimitrios Kioutsoukis is not fighting against the powerful, but against conventional wines that are gradually degrading nature. For this reason, Kioutsoukis was inspired by this story when it came to naming his Kamara Shadow Play Red wine.

Kamara Shadow Play Red is a natural, single-variety red wine made from Xinomavro, one of the varieties native to northern Greece. The Kioutsouki vineyards lie on the slopes of Mygdonya, about 30 km from Thessaloniki, in an area that for several centuries was dedicated to vine cultivation. This tradition, which Dimitrios still strives to revive, was partly lost in the early 1900s with the arrival of phylloxera. Now Dimitrios, with the help of his family, is once again putting these age-old expertise into practice with his biodynamically cultivated vines, where nature knows what it is doing and the winemaker is a mere “assistant” (as Dimitrios explains).

The ​Xinomavro vines grow on shale soils, where clays and sands mix, at an altitude of 140 metres above sea level. In Thessaloniki, considered the second capital of Greece, the Mediterranean climate prevails, with mild winters and hot summers that are cooled by sea breezes. Another very important factor is the Vardaris, a well-known northwest wind that blows throughout the year, obviously influencing the vines and their ripening. All these factors are noticeable in Kamara Shadow Play Red, as the winemaking process in the winery is as non-interventionist as possible. To begin with, Kamara Shadow Play Red is harvested by hand, with spontaneous fermentation using native yeasts and in full contact with the skins. Kamara Shadow Play Red is aged for approximately 12 months in old barrels. Three of these months will be in contact with the lees (and the corresponding stirring). Finally, it is important to remember that Kamara Shadow Play Red will not have any sulphites added, nor will it be clarified or filtered: it will simply undergo tartrate stabilisation.

2020

Kamara Shadow Play Red 2020 is a concentrated, very complex dark red. The nose reveals red fruits, vanilla, plum, tomato and black olive. The palate is full-bodied with well-integrated tannins. Voluminous and very tasty. Persistent finish.
