About Kanonkop Pinotage

Kanonkop Pinotage is a red wine made in the Coastal Region (South Africa) with the Pinotage variety by the Kanonkop winery.

The name is inspired by the hillock (kopje) that a cannon (kanon) would be fired from in the 17th century to alert the locals to the arrival of European ships. Kanonkop is a family winery that has passed down its way of working from generation to generation. Located in Simonsberg-Stellenbosch, a denomination that is popularly known as “the red wine bowl” because of its ideal geological and climatic conditions, they produce high quality grapes to make wines with a great reputation around the world.

Of the 125 hectares of the estate, 100 are vineyards. The Kanonkop Pinotage wine comes from old vines aged over 60 years and traditionally cultivated. To do this, they carefully monitor the grapes throughout the growth cycle, testing the sugar, acid and PH levels, as well as carrying out a visual check every day. When the grape reaches optimum ripeness, it is harvested manually.

In the winery, the Kanonkop Pinotage grapes are gently pressed and placed in open concrete tanks at a controlled temperature of 28oC. There the juice stays in contact with its skins for 3 to 7 days with pump overs every two hours. Finally, it ages for 18 months in 225-litre French oak barrels, 75% of which are new and the rest are being used for the second year.

Kanonkop Pinotage is a clear example of new world quality and know-how. Complex aromas and flavours of fruit and terroir that make the most delicious glass of wine.

2017 Kanonkop Pinotage 2017 is a concentrated red wine with attractive aromas of ripe red fruits, sweet vanilla notes and spicy oak touches. On the palate it is powerful, fruity and complex. It is perfectly balanced, with elegant tannins and a juicy acidity.
