About La Muria

The D.O. Bierzo has been elevated to new heights. And Luis Gutiérrez, the critic for Spain from Robert Parker, is to blame. For the first time, the historic designation of origin in northwestern Spain has achieved 42 exceptional wines and 157 excellent ones. Among them, the standout is La Muria by Raúl Pérez.
 
With this red wine, which has sparked passions from the outset, Raúl Pérez feels like "that climber who has finally reached the mountain's summit." He was always on the verge of achieving that 100-point excellence; but as the saying goes: persistence pays off. Now, it's time for him to celebrate with a glass of this single-varietal mencía cultivated in the highest vineyard of El Bierzo, at about 1,045 meters above sea level, located in the village of Viariz where other varieties like palomino and bastarda are also grown. This point has been crucial as the old vines, over 30 years old, have had very low yields (no more than 5,000 kilos); but they have managed to deliver a complex character, full of nuances and quality, resulting in great expressiveness with only a few bottles available (no more than 900 bottles and 700 liters).
 
The rest of the process for La Muria is defined by manual harvesting, vinification with whole clusters (a distinctive feature of Raúl Pérez), spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, a maceration period (where the wine will be in contact with the skins for two months), and the final pressing, where La Muria will be racked. The final touch comes from the 500-litre used barrels where this red wine will remain for at least a year.
 
Once again, Raúl Pérez has masterfully captured the slate soils and terroir of this area; but with La Muria, he has outdone himself. La Muria is not just another wine from Raúl Pérez; it is the symbol of boundless and tireless dedication, the result of a unique and unrepeatable vision that no one else in Spain possesses.

 

2021
La Muria 2021 is a barrel-aged red wine that stands out for its lightness, fluidity, and subtle minerality. On the nose, it clearly reveals aromas of fresh red fruits, such as cherries and raspberries, along with a delicate hint of vanilla. On the palate, it is smooth and easy to drink, with well-integrated tannins and a pleasantly fresh finish. Ideal for those seeking an approachable and balanced red wine.
