About La Suerte Albillo

In the Toledo pastureland, there are moments when the countryside seems to pause for a second before continuing. The air is redolent of hot dust, holm oak, and parched grass that struggles to endure the summer. Amidst all this, almost hidden, is the myrtle. A modest shrub, the evergreen myrtle, which when brushed against releases a fresh, verdant fragrance, as if someone had flung open a window in the heart of the countryside. It is no coincidence that a winery decided to bear its name. In 1999, José María Entrecanales and María Marsans were not seeking an ornamental name. They sought a way to say that this is landscape, this is earth, this is life coexisting in silence.

Bodegas Arrayán was born from this gesture. At the La Verdosa estate, in Santa Cruz del Retamar, the vineyard cannot be understood without looking around. Holm oaks, Mediterranean scrub, poor soil, harsh plateau light. Here, the wine does not seek to dominate the landscape but to become part of it. It is an ecosystem. A place where the vine shares space with the wild, and where each vine seems to earn its water, shade, and time.

And within this context emerges La Suerte Albillo, originating from the D.O. Méntrida, in the Almorox area, at an altitude of about 600 metres. This is not a decorative figure; here, the altitude truly matters. It marks the difference between ripening quickly or doing so leisurely. Between losing freshness or preserving it. The vineyard is ancient, planted in 1950, vines that have witnessed too many summers to be deceived by one more. Sandy soils, loose, almost light to the touch, that do not retain water and compel the roots to delve deep, to fend for themselves. This is evident later in the wine, in that sensation of fine tension, of fruit that does not weigh heavily.

The albillo real is the silent protagonist of all this. A white variety that in the heart of the peninsula has always been discreet, almost domestic, but which in patient hands transforms into something far more serious. It is not explosive, does not seek easy impact. Rather, it is about texture, volume, a way of filling the mouth unhurriedly, like one who sits at a table with no intention of rising soon.

In the winery, the work follows the same logic of not interfering. The grapes enter and are treated with care, initially undergoing a cold maceration with their skins for two days. It is a brief contact, but sufficient for the must to begin to understand the fruit it has before it. Then it is pressed, gently, without force, separating what is no longer needed. And then something crucial happens, fermentation begins on its own, spontaneously. No selected yeasts are added, the process is not directed from outside. It is the natural yeasts, those from the vineyard itself, that transform the sugar into wine. It is a process seemingly less controllable, but much truer to its origin.

Fermentation is maintained at a controlled temperature, not to tame the wine, but to prevent the heat of the process from obliterating its aromatic finesse. And then comes time. Seven months in French oak barrels of 300 and 500 litres. These are not barrels intended to imprint on the wine, but to accompany it.

And in the end, what remains is a very clear sensation. La Suerte Albillo is a wine that reveals itself as you let it be. Like those places that initially seem simple and then, without you realising, have won you over.
