About Loxarel Ancestral A Pèl Barba-Roja

Innovative, irreverent and avant-garde, Loxarel is a small Penedès winery and a pioneer in orange wine, ancient and biodynamic practices. Its most rock & roll range, “A Pèl” (Catalan for “bareback”), is made up of the most original biodynamic wines with a peculiar picture on the label of a bald white man on the A Pèl Blanco and A Pèl Ancestral and a bald black man on A Pèl Negro. However, for the range’s rosé, Loxarel Ancestral A Pèl Barba-Roja, it was not so easy. How do you show a bald redhead? For this, they had to convince the sommelier of the Raïm restaurant in Alicante, Jordi Garcia, to let them shave his hair completely off and sit for a photo shoot with his lush red beard. The red-haired man was so enthusiastic about the project that he even suggested that the official presentation of this ancient sparkling wine be held at his restaurant a few weeks later.


An irreverent image that honours a wine that goes beyond convention. Loxarel Ancestral A Pèl Barba-Roja is an ancient sparkling wine that comes from Sumoll, Xarel·lo Rojo and Garnacha Tinta vineyards lying at an altitude of 700 m above sea level. The soil is clayey, poor and chalky and the vineyard is cultivated using organic and biodynamic methods. Once the grapes have been harvested by hand, they are vinified following the ancient method of a single fermentation that begins in 720-litre clay amphorae with the skins and without the addition of artificial yeast and sugar, and ends in the bottle. As Josep Mitjans, winemaker and owner of Loxarel explains, “the wine is bottled as it used to be, while it is still fermenting, and this must be on a certain day and at a certain time, even if it is at night or Barça is playing”. Once ready, it is sold without disgorging and with its own lees.

With Loxarel Ancestral A Pèl Barba-Roja, this small winery in the municipality of Vilobí del Penedès, completes a range of wines that, as its own name “A Pèl” (bareback) suggests, reveals the pure, unmasked virtues of the vineyards and terroirs of the D.O. Penedès. An ancient sparkling wine with the pure identity of its terroir and artisan production.

 

2020

Loxarel Ancestral A Pèl Barba-Roja 2020 is a sparkling wine with an attractive pale pink colour. The nose reveals delicate aromas of red cranberries and subtle floral notes. The palate is fresh, effervescent and pleasant. A wine with very good acidity thanks to the altitude of the vineyards where it comes from and a long and delicious finish.
