About Luna Gaia Chiaramontesi Nero d'Avola

Maria Thun, renowned as a pioneer in biodynamic agricultural practices, left an enduring legacy in the relationship between astronomical cycles and plant cultivation. It all began in 1952 when she ventured to experiment with sowing radishes, planting them over several consecutive days. Upon observing that their growth was uneven and varied, she decided to conduct further sowings under identical conditions over several weeks. This research led her to understand the influence of lunar cycles and planetary positions on plant growth. From her findings, she developed the first biodynamic sowing calendar, a tool that has now become essential for many farmers and gardeners seeking a more natural and sustainable approach to their agricultural practices. The wines that strictly adhere to Maria Thun's studies are those produced at Luna Gaia, a project born from the collaboration between the Cantina Orsogna cooperative, a prestigious winery in Abruzzo, and BioGaia, a collective of Sicilian biodynamic farmers. With striking labels that pay visual homage to L'Opera dei Pupi Siciliana (the Sicilian puppet opera), the wines of Luna Gaia reflect not only a commitment to biodynamic agriculture but also a profound connection to Sicilian culture.

One of their wines, Luna Gaia Chiaramontesi Nero d'Avola, is a single-varietal nero d'Avola whose vines thrive in the calcareous soils and enjoy the mild Sicilian climatic conditions. Biodynamic cultivation methods are applied, respecting natural cycles and allowing flocks of sheep to roam freely through the vineyards. In the winery, the selected grapes ferment with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks with frequent pump-overs. Afterwards, the wine ages for 6 months in these same tanks. Finally, the wine is bottled and remains for 6 months in the cellar before being released to the market.
