Makatzak Ghaur 2022 is a youthful and vibrant white wine. Upon the first sip, a refreshing sparkle invigorates the senses. On the nose, it stands out with aromas of green apple and lemon, accompanied by a subtle mineral note. On the palate, its lightness and freshness are balanced with a creamy touch that imparts smoothness. An exceptional txakoli that perfectly combines pome fruit and citrus with a pleasant minerality.

About Makatzak Ghaur

Reviving abandoned vineyards is no easy task. It not only demands constant effort and a long-term vision but also a profound respect for the land and its history. However, each day more brave souls join this arduous endeavour for its rewarding results. Among the vintners who embark on the recovery of vineyards driven by a deep love for their craft and a desire to perpetuate an ancient tradition, we find Aitor Irazu and Jon Estebanez, two Basque cousins who, under the name Makatzak Wild Wines, produce exciting and authentic wines that capture the true essence of natural wine.

Located in the municipality of Aia, in the province of Gipuzkoa (Basque Country), these two vintners focus their efforts on Sorgintxulo, an abandoned 3-hectare vineyard that serves as the starting point of this exhilarating Atlantic project. This is evidenced in Makatzak Ghaur, a white wine made from the indigenous variety hondarrabi zuri and a small amount of hondarrabi beltza. Vines planted at 400 metres above sea level, on steep slopes of slate soils and based on organic, natural, regenerative, and biodynamic agriculture. The harvest is carried out manually in 10 kg boxes, with several passes to obtain the best possible ripeness. Once in the winery, the selected, destemmed, and pressed grapes ferment spontaneously in stainless steel tanks with native yeasts. Afterwards, the wine remains on fine lees for 10 months without battonage in these same tanks. Finally, it is bottled without filtering or fining.

Seeking the utmost expression of Atlantic viticulture, Makatzak Ghaur conveys the beauty and uniqueness of txakolí. A wine integrated into the D.O. Getariako-Txakolina as a result of the hard work, passion, and commitment that Aitor and Jon have invested in the magical vineyard of Sorgintxulo.
