About Manoir Tête de la Rouge Tête d’Ange

Known as the "Valley of the Kings," the Loire Valley earned this nickname due to the numerous royal castles and noble residences constructed during the Renaissance and the Middle Ages. This region is renowned for its scenic beauty, fertile soil, and natural light emanating from the local limestone known as "tuffeau" or tufa. This element has been fundamental in the construction of these iconic buildings and has contributed to the magic and unmistakable character of the Loire Valley. However, tuffeau has not only shaped the landscape and architecture of this French region but has also played a crucial role in viticulture, enhancing the quality and distinctive character of the region's wines. Guillaume Reynouard, the winemaker at Manoir Tête de la Rouge, is well aware of this and, contrary to standardized and production-based oenology, his aim is to showcase the full expression of the terroirs he cultivates on the Puy Notre Dame hill in Saumur. A total of 18 hectares, certified as biodynamic since 2010, where the purest essence of the famous clay-limestone that has captivated kings and nobles over the centuries is revealed.

An example of this work is Manoir Tête de la Rouge Tête d’Ange, a white wine made from the star variety of the AOC Saumur, chenin. Vines aged between 8 and 30 years planted on this limestone and clay soil, which imparts a unique mineral structure and fertility. It is cultivated organically with the application of all biodynamic treatments to protect the natural balance of the terroir. The harvest is done manually, and then, in the winery, fermentation is carried out with native yeasts and remains for 7 months in concrete tanks on lees. Finally, the wine is bottled without clarification or filtration.

Manoir Tête de la Rouge Tête d’Ange is a pure manifestation of this terroir. An immersion into the historical legacy of the Loire Valley, where tufa limestone has not only shaped the landscape and architecture but also sculpted the freshness and minerality of its wines.

2022

Manoir Tête de la Rouge Tête d’Ange 2022 exhibits a straw yellow hue with greenish highlights. On the nose, it reveals aromas of white flowers and the pronounced ripeness of chenin, accompanied by citrus notes such as lemon and grapefruit. On the palate, it has a creamy texture that suggests sweetness, although it is a dry wine. The attack is clean with moderate length, offering a straightforward complexity. Ideal for those seeking an accessible and aromatic white wine.
