Heroic viticulture sounds epic, and rightly so. We are talking about wines born in seemingly impossible locations, where cultivating the vine is a physical and technical challenge that would make even the bravest break a sweat. Vineyards clinging to vertical slopes, stone terraces that seem to defy gravity, and rocky soils that must be worked by hand, with each vine tended to as if it were a treasure. There are no tractors or giant machines here. Everything depends on the strength, patience, and skill of the vintner.
One of the regions where heroic viticulture is at its most expressive is Valtellina, nestled in the heart of the Lombard Alps. A valley that combines history, landscape, and altitude. Between 350 and 650 metres, its terraced vineyards dominate the valley with breathtaking verticality. Sandy, clay, and schist soils mingle with the historic nebbiolo, the local chiavennasca, imparting structure, longevity, and elegance to the wines.
In this almost mythological setting emerges Marco Ferrari, a name that is garnering much attention. After training in the northern Rhône with luminaries like Frank Balthazar, and learning from nebbiolo and syrah legends such as Gonon, Clape, and Thierry Allemand, Marco developed a profound understanding of how to manage vertical and rocky vineyards where mechanisation is impossible. His experience at ArPePe, the benchmark winery of Valtellina, solidified his vision until, in 2021, he decided to embark on his own personal project, applying all he had learned and his passion for heroic vineyards.
This is how he presents us with wines like Marco Ferrari Sassella Valtellina Superiore, a 100% nebbiolo red born in the subzone of Sassella, a spectacular cru situated at 480 metres altitude, with a limited production. Fermented with native yeasts and aged for 24 months in used wood, this wine retains its character intact and perfectly reflects the spirit of the territory: verticality, minerality, strength, and elegance.
Given that in Valtellina greatness is cultivated uphill, Marco Ferrari Sassella Valtellina Superiore is a nebbiolo that defies gravity and invites you to feel the mountain's energy in every sip.
