About Masseria del Pino I Nove Fratelli
Masseria del Pino, translating to "the pine farm" in Italian, is the brainchild of Federica and Cesare, two Catanesi who, weary of their routine lives, decided to leave behind their former professions as an archery instructor and an airplane pilot, respectively, to embark on a new chapter amidst the splendor of nature. It was in 2005 that they set about refurbishing the palmento, an ancient stone vat that was once the property of their grandfather and his eight siblings, nestled on the northern slopes of Sicily's Mount Etna in Randazzo. They began the revitalization of a hectare of bush-trained vineyard using wholesome, organic, and family-oriented farming practices. With the initial aim of the project being to achieve the greatest degree of self-sufficiency possible—cultivating their own vegetables, producing olive oil, rearing farm animals, and making their own wine in the manner of their forebears—once they realized their wine production exceeded their personal consumption, they opted to bottle it and label it with their own unique designs, thus offering it for sale to friends and local stores.
In homage to these nine ancestral siblings, Federica and Cesare crafted Masseria del Pino I Nove Fratelli, an entirely handcrafted red wine that showcases a splendid and profound expression of the pre-phylloxera vines of nerello cappuccio and nerello mascalese. These 120-year-old vines are planted in volcanic soil at an altitude of 800 meters above sea level and are tended to alongside animals, fruit trees, olive groves, and walnut trees using organic, biodynamic, and holistic practices. Once in the winery, the grapes are hand-selected and destemmed, and pressing is carried out in the ancient palmento. Fermentation occurs with indigenous yeasts in conical trunks crafted from chestnut trees from the surrounding forest, with maceration lasting approximately two weeks. The wine then matures in 500-liter wooden barrels over the course of 12 months before being bottled unfiltered.
The result is the exquisite Masseria del Pino I Nove Fratelli, a purely artisanal expression of Etna Rosso whose quality, minerality, and elegance can be likened to that of a young Barolo.
