About Matassa Blossom

The more you explore the world, the more your horizons and opportunities expand. Tom Lubbe, a New Zealander without borders, began his oenological journey in South Africa, working at the Welgemeend estate. However, his fascination with the Mediterranean led him to embark on a life-changing adventure: the vibrant south of France, specifically at the legendary Domaine Gauby in the Roussillon (France), where he initially intended to stay for three months. Yet, fate had other plans as Tom and Gérard Gauby immediately connected, and their bond was so strong that Gérard asked Tom to extend his stay and join the team for a longer period. What began as a professional experience evolved into a profound connection, both with the Domaine and the Gauby family, to the extent that Tom fell in love with Gérard's sister, Natalia, further entwining his life with the captivating world of Mediterranean wine.

Once settled, Tom established his own venture, Matassa, in 2003 to produce natural wines crafted from traditional varieties without chemical aids, such as Matassa Blossom. An orange wine derived from Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains vines planted in clay-limestone soil and cultivated by hand. In the winery, whole bunches, without destemming, undergo carbonic maceration for two weeks. Afterwards, they are gently pressed, and spontaneous fermentation occurs with indigenous yeasts. Finally, the wine matures in old barrels for seven months before being bottled unfiltered, unfined, and without added sulphur.

Adorned with a most floral label, Matassa Blossom is an orange wine that captures the essence of the Mediterranean and its creator's artisanal approach. Fresh, complex, and with a unique character, it offers a vibrant and profoundly natural sensory experience.

 

2023

Matassa Blossom 2023 is an orange wine with a straw-yellow hue and greenish reflections. On the nose, it reveals aromas of fruits such as peach and apricot, accompanied by sweet and subtly roasted notes. In the finish, herbaceous and iodine nuances are discernible. On the palate, it exhibits a good creaminess and a vibrant acidity that imparts freshness. Its body is well-balanced, with a notable smoothness despite a slight alcoholic warmth. The finish is persistent and flavoursome, leaving a pleasant impression.
