About Matassa Carner Rouge

Matassa Carner Rouge is a natural wine made from Grenache and Macabeu and produced by Domaine Matassa in the Languedoc-Roussillon area, in southern France.

Domaine Matassa is a winery founded in 2001 by Tom Lubbe, a New Zealander who grew up in South Africa and settled in France. The winery cultivates its strains of Grenache, Carignan, Macabeo, Muscat, etc. organically and biodynamically at an altitude of over 450 metres in the hills of Fenouillède. Its plots cover a total of 14 hectares, their yields are very low, about 3,500 kg per hectare, and the grapes are vinified with native yeasts and using very low levels of sulphites. Its wines are pleasant, fresh and vibrant.

The vineyard forMatassa Carner Rouge is about 115 years old on a small plot of 0.5 hectares. Its soil is a mixture of lime, clay and slate and is surrounded by garrigue. The climate of the area is influenced by the Mediterranean and the presence of the nearby Pyrenees.

Matassa Carner Rouge ferments with native yeasts, macerating for a month with the skins. The wine undergoes an ageing of 8 months on its lees in a 1,000 litre Italian amphora. It is bottled without filtering and without added sulphites.

Matassa Carner Rouge is a red wine with a touch of white, aged in an amphora.
2018 Matassa Carner Rouge 2018 has intense aromas of red berries, peaches, fresh and ripe citrus, with earthy and mineral touches and a great mouthfeel. Its finish is very intense, fresh and lingering.
