About Matassa Cuvée Alexandría

Since the 1990s, a young man from New Zealand had already begun crafting wine in the Swartland region of South Africa, working with minimal intervention and refraining from adding commercial yeasts. That young man is Tom Lubbe, an ardent vintner who, from the outset, sought to honour the natural character and essence of the grape to the fullest. His curiosity and passion for Mediterranean varietals led him to the legendary Domaine Gauby in the south of France, where he honed his winemaking skills under the guidance of the Catalan maestro, Gérard Gauby.

In that enchanting setting of the Roussillon, Tom not only found a mentor but also met Nathalie, Gérard's sister, who is now his wife and partner in this vinous venture. In 2002, they established their own domaine, a quaint sanctuary of 15 hectares with vines aged between 30 and 115 years. In these vineyards, indigenous and traditional varieties such as Grenache Gris, Macabeu, Muscat d’Alexandrie, and Carignan cohabit. Most are intermingled and co-planted within the same plots, contributing complexity and richness to their wines.

What truly sets Domaine Matassa apart is its unwavering commitment to the natural world and the biosphere surrounding them. Located at an altitude of 450 metres, their vineyards are cultivated without chemicals, promoting biodiversity and creating an ecosystem where beneficial insects maintain the natural balance. This approach also allows for a harvest much earlier than average, resulting in wines with lower alcohol content, vibrant freshness, and unique character.

A sublime example of this work is Matassa Cuvée Alexandría, an orange wine crafted from Moscatel de Alejandría grapes grown on mixed soils of schist and marl under strict organic principles. In the winery, vinification is conducted with utmost care: rigorous selection, destemming, alcoholic fermentation with indigenous yeasts, pigeage, and malolactic fermentation in 500-litre French oak barrels, where the wine matures for 11 months, gaining texture, complexity, and elegance.
