Matsu La Jefa 2022 is an enticing white wine with a bright straw-yellow hue and greyish highlights. As you bring it closer to the nose, complex aromas of vanilla, ripe apples, and a subtle hint of anise emerge, reflecting its maturation in large wooden vats. Upon tasting, the sensation is enveloping and creamy, with a well-balanced acidity that imparts elegance. Its fine texture stands out, contributing additional richness with a creamy and sophisticated flavour profile.

About Matsu La Jefa

The Matsu family is growing and growing. Having experienced the youth of El Pícaro, the integrity of El Recio and the maturity of El Viejo, La Compañía de Vinos Vintae has surprised us again with La Jefe, their first aged white wine which, of course, has made quite an entrance, securing its own place within this great family of the D.O. Toro (Castilla y León). This project was started by the technical director of Vintae, Raúl Acha and the company’s general manager, Richi Arambarri in 2005 to pay tribute to all the winegrowers who, generation after generation, have worked the vineyard with effort and dedication, not forgetting, of course the woman of the Toro vineyard; the real head of the family.        

La Jefa is a white wine made mainly with the Spanish Malvasía variety from hundred-year-old and pre-phylloxera vineyards, alongside a small amount of other white varieties aged between 50 and 150 years. These are low-yield, old vines growing in poor sandy soils with a high amount of granitic stones. They are cultivated in a way that respects the Toro winemaking traditions. Once the grapes have reached optimal condition, they are harvested by hand and transported in boxes and small trailers. Then when they reach the winery, they macerate with the skins for 4 hours and are gently pressed with static racking. The resulting must then ferments spontaneously with native yeasts in new 600-litre French oak barrels. Finally, the wine rests on its lees in these same barrels for 14 months. 

With La Jefa, Matsu shows us the feminine side of a winery that has not stopped captivating people since it started. A pleasant wine with character as well as all the necessary structure to make it last for a long time. No one can resist La Jefa!

Matsu La Jefa 2021 emerges as a white wine characterized by its pronounced maturity and structure. Olfactorily, it unfurls a spectrum of intense aromas, with ripe pome fruits such as pear and apple taking center stage, interwoven with sweet hints of vanilla and a delicate undertone of anise. On the palate, it unveils a velvety texture that coats the taste buds, delivering a harmony between its body and the crispness that renders it lingering and delightful to savor.
2020 Matsu La Jefa 2020 is a very aromatic white wine. Ripe white fruits appear on the nose accompanied by notes of vanilla and anise accompanied by creamy and floral nuances. Silky and enveloping on the palate, with balanced acidity. A round, persistent and very elegant white wine.

Matsu La Jefa 2018 is a creamy white wine with complex aromas of ripe pome fruit, hints of vanilla and hints of pastries. On the palate it is enveloping, glyceric and very pleasant. A very well-structured wine with good acidity, sweet nuances and a fine texture that is most pleasing.
