About Mendall La Plana de Guiu

While not as renowned as the architect Gaudí, his protégé Cèsar Martinell has also bequeathed a stunning modernist legacy. Masterpieces such as the wine cathedral located in the Catalan town of Pinell de Brai, in Terra Alta (Catalonia), provide us with splendid examples of the quintessential Catalan artistic movement. Within this cathedral, the town's cooperative, Laureano Serres Montagut unveils his low-intervention creations. A fervent advocate for the land and traditional methods, under the brand Mendall, the name once borne by his mother's house, he presents a range of minimally intervened wines that immerse us in a Mediterranean landscape that stirs the soul.

From one of the estates he cultivates (La Plana de Guiu) comes Mendall La Plana de Guiu, a white wine crafted from Macabeo, Garnacha Blanca, and Moscatel varieties, originating from vines aged between 5-8 years, planted on clay-loam soil with limestone at an altitude of 512 meters. Cultivated organically and with biodynamic principles, the grapes are handpicked at the peak of ripeness. Once at the winery, the grapes undergo a 4-day maceration with their skins, and after a gentle pressing, the juice spontaneously ferments with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks, where it remains for 3 months, followed by an additional month in terracotta amphora. The wine is then bottled unfiltered, unfined, and without the addition of sulfites.

Just as modernism transformed architecture with its innovative style, Laureano Serres Montagut has revolutionized the wine world, spearheading the minimal intervention movement in Catalonia. Mendall La Plana de Guiu is the fruit of this impeccable work that allows for the authentic expression of the grape and the terroir.
