About Newton Johnson Family Vineyards Chardonnay

Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are the two typical quintessential varieties of Burgundy (in central-eastern France). However, there are other areas across the world where both varieties also shine, like the Hemel-en-Aarde valley (in southern South Africa). In this area, in the Walker Bay district, in the Cape South Coast region, Chardonnay is one of the most important varieties, and they make wines like Newton Johnson Family Vineyards Chardonnay, a white wine produced by Newton Johnson.

The South African Ward denomination, which is a small, well-defined wine-growing area, is the closest thing to European single-vineyard wines. In particular, the Hemel-en-Aarde ward is the area closest to the Atlantic Ocean, with a clear maritime influence, which is cooled by both the Benguela wind current (which comes from Antarctica) and the Cape Doctor (a wind that blows from spring to late summer and is believed to cleanse the City of Cape Town of pollution). Both factors make Walker Bay one of the coldest districts in South Africa, with an average temperature of 25°C and average annual rainfall of 750 mm (very similar to Champagne and Burgundy). However, this is not the only similarity, where the first vineyards were planted in the area, because they also grow on clay soils that are very similar to those of the Côte D'Or, (although shallower and stonier), with a varied orientations. This clay is good for absorbing water and storing the various trace elements necessary for vine cultivation.

Thanks to these climate conditions, it has not been difficult for Gordon and Nadia Newton Johnson to make brilliant wines, like Newton Johnson Family Vineyards Chardonnay, a creamy white made in the Burgundy style. The grapes for this white wine are harvested by hand in small boxes (to avoid crushing and them turning into must). When the bunches reach the winery, they are cooled to 8ºC overnight until the following morning when, at a suitable temperature, they are moved to a selection table where any that do not meet the minimum quality criteria are removed. This conveyor belt is connected to the press, which is where the whole bunches move to. The Newton Johnson Family Vineyards Chardonnay must is set aside for racking. Once clean and free of suspended substances, Newton Johnson Family Vineyards Chardonnay is transferred to barrels where it ferments on native yeasts.

Once this process has finished, Newton Johnson Family Vineyards Chardonnay is aged for 11 months in custom-made 228-litre and 500-litre Burgundy oak barrels and 2 months in stainless steel tanks. Finally, Newton Johnson Family Vineyards Chardonnay is neither filtered nor clarified before bottling.

2020

Newton Johnson Family Vineyards Chardonnay 2020 unveils with a nuanced fullness and a restrained aromatic profile. As one brings the glass to the nose, crisp scents of lemon and grapefruit arise, interwoven with gentle whispers of oatmeal and a faint hint of cinnamon. On the palate, this white wine charms with its velvety texture, leading to a refined and gratifying finish that beckons a further taste.

2019

Newton Johnson Family Vineyards Chardonnay 2019 is a luscious, creamy white wine. The bouquet reveals aromas of pears, citrus fruits, vanilla, and hazelnuts. On the palate, it is complex and robust, with a dense core of fruit where citrus, white peach, and lime continue to emerge. The texture is meaty and crisp. It's exuberant. The finish is extensive and tart.
