About Nicolás Potel Borgoña Pinot Noir

A real bargain. A wine to be enjoyed. More than just a bargain, Nicolas Potel Burgundy Pinot Noir is a great wine and a great opportunity to try a Burgundy gem at a very affordable price. While the price of other Burgundy wines can reach three figures, Nicolas Potel Burgundy Pinot Noir remains true to its philosophy: to showcase the Burgundy identity without going overboard.

This approach was the brainchild of Nicolas Portel, son of the renowned winemaker Gérard Portel who died in 1997, after which, Nicolas decided to set himself up as a négociant, showcasing and producing great wines from this province in northeastern France. In fact, if there is one area that every wine lover should experience, it is Burgundy, land of the great reds. Part of this importance lies in the uniqueness and mix of its soils and microclimates (embodied in more than 80 Appellation d'origine Contrôlée), which are arranged in monopoles (large vineyards run by a single owner) and climats (small vineyards cultivated by several winegrowers). The latter, where the vignerons sometimes own only a couple of rows, is the most common, and collaborations between several vignerons are necessary to achieve large production volumes. This is where the role of the négociant comes in, as they are people who buy the grapes from the vigneron and just produce and sell them.

To do this, and despite the fact that since 2009 this company has not been owned by Nicolás Portel, the quality of the grapes must continue to be the best. This is why, when it comes to Maison Nicolas Porter, the thorough examination and selection processes remain the cornerstones of the production process. These checks are carried out in the vineyard, at harvest time, with only the best bunches selected. When they reach the winery, they are all destemmed, thus beginning a production process based on the minimum possible intervention. Nicolas Potel Burgundy Pinot Noir is aged in stainless steel tanks where it undergoes spontaneous alcoholic fermentation with native yeasts. This step, where no substances of any kind are added, is fundamental, as it guarantees the identity and unique expression of the terroir. After that, Nicolas Potel Burgundy Pinot Noir is transferred to neutral oak barrels, where it will be aged for 5 to 6 months. Finally, at the time of bottling, the wine is extracted by making a broquereau, an opening in the bottom of the barrel that allows the wine to pour out with the help of gravity. Nothing is too much trouble to keep this Burgundy gem in the best possible condition.
