About Nogara Viñas Viejas

For years, verdejo enjoyed its moment of glory. Fresh, aromatic wines, easy to drink with a gastronomic flair that made them a staple at bars and terraces. However, reducing the DO Rueda to this light style is merely scratching the surface. There exists another dimension, more measured and profound, which some wineries are determined to champion. This is where Bodegas Valtravieso steps in, with a clear vision to demonstrate that verdejo can also be complex, serious, and long-lived.

Valtravieso has not arrived at this narrative by chance. The winery, established in 1985, has built its reputation by producing wines in Ribera del Duero, where it was a pioneer in working with its own vineyards. Its philosophy—based on respecting the limestone plateau and minimal intervention—has defined a style marked by finesse, tension, and freshness, contrasting with the more concentrated and powerful profiles typical of the area. This same approach is applied to their creations in Rueda, offering a different perspective to the denomination.

Nogara Viñas Viejas is the natural extension of this way of understanding wine. The grapes come from a unique plot of pre-phylloxera vines in the highest part of Rueda, at an altitude of 850 metres. An extreme landscape where the thermal amplitude and sandy soils, dotted with gravel and pebbles, imbue the wine with tension, precision, and uncommon elegance.

The variety is indeed verdejo, but in a version that departs from the stereotype. Hand-harvested and fermented in 225 and 500-litre barrels, it leaves behind the explosive and primary profile to delve into a more restrained and complex register. The 12-month ageing on lees—in those same barrels and large foudres—adds volume, texture, and depth.

Nogara Viñas Viejas is a verdejo that does not seek immediate impact, but rather longevity. For yes, verdejo can be direct and carefree. But it can also be a wine with structure, intention, and memory. And projects like that of Valtravieso are here to remind us of this.

This wine is highly recommended for its harmonious blend of freshness and creaminess, achieved through meticulous barrel ageing.
