About Tiro al Blanco Castes Tintas

Certain wines are distinguished by their uniqueness and, over time, set trends. The current prevailing trend is a return to the roots, honouring the land, the vineyards, and the traditional methods of winemaking, while promoting organic and biodynamic viticulture, thus creating genuine and authentic wines. Initially, these wines might be perceived as unusual, but in time they are praised and, above all, emulated by other wineries. Matias Michelini, an internationally renowned Argentine winemaker with over 80 labels crafted in the Uco Valley, is one of the staunch advocates of this trend. To this end, he seeks out half-forgotten terroirs with old vines and indigenous varieties. This quest led him to the Galician town of Ribadavia, where he began his most personal project across the sea. With 4 hectares of small estates whose vineyards belong to D.O. Ribeiro, Matias Michelini offers his own interpretation of this enthralling region.

He crafts wines in the way they were traditionally made. Village wines with local varieties that stand out for being natural and brimming with authenticity. Such is the case with Tiro al Blanco Castes Tintas, a wine made from mencía, brancellao, merenzao, sousón, and caíño grapes. Old vines on granitic soils benefit from the Atlantic water and sunshine, combined with the expertise of one of the world's most celebrated viticulturists. Ecological agriculture is practiced with biodynamic treatments, yield minimization, and hand harvesting. In the winery, the selected grapes are vinified separately, undergoing spontaneous fermentation with stems and indigenous yeasts, followed by a 9-month maturation in amphorae. The wine is then bottled with natural clarification and without the addition of sulfites.

Natural, captivating, and authentic, Tiro al Blanco Castes Tintas charms on its own merits. A village wine made in the traditional manner that perfectly encapsulates the spirit of a designation of origin, that of Ribeiro, and a craftsmanship that sets it apart.
