About Occhipinti Vino di Contrada Santa Margherita SM 2020

“We didn’t inherit the land from our ancestors, we borrowed it from our children.” This is a commitment to an absolute respect for the land by the young Sicilian Arianna Occhipinti, who has become one of the most important natural wine producers in the world. It all started when he went with his uncle, Giusto Occhipinti of Azienda COS, to the international wine fair Vinitaly at the age of 16 and was so captivated by the event that he decided to study oenology. Her mentor is one of Sicily’s most respected winemakers, so this smiley, passionate and dynamic young winemaker is following in their footsteps by growing and making her own wine in the Sicilian village of Fossa di Lupo. By using local varieties and respecting the grapes and the wine as if they were human beings, she achieves wonderful wines with straight and pure textures that are a long way away from the industrial productions of her neighbouring contemporaries.

One of the surprising wines in her collection, Occhipinti Vino di Contrada Santa Margherita SM is one of her latest creations. This is a dream come true after a long search for a vineyard with very special conditions. It comes from an abandoned vineyard at the foot of the Iblei Mountains with vines of the native Grillo variety planted on sandy soils of white calcareous marl and marine sediments at an altitude of 490 meters. These vineyards are located among pine forests, holm oaks and century-old olive trees and are organically cultivated, respecting the soil and its balance. In the winery, after a short maceration of 48 hours, the must ferments spontaneously with native yeasts in a mixture of concrete and Austrian oak barrels. Then, in these same containers, the wine ages for 12 months.

Given that Occhipinti sees the grape variety as a way of reflecting origin, this Occhipinti Vino di Contrada Santa Margherita SM is a structural experience of the terroir. A wine made through two years of experimentation and in very low production.

 

Occhipinti Vino di Contrada Santa Margherita SM 2020 is a defined white wine with fine citrus aromas, herbal notes of sage, bay leaf and wild oregano and hints of linseed oil. The palate is clean, serene and pure. A dry wine with fresh citrus acidity, fine stimulating tannins and a deliciously salty mineral finish.
