About Ostatu Reserva

Did you know that in Basque, "ostatu" means accommodation? A warm, inviting word that evokes inns, rest, travellers seeking shelter... And also wine. Yes, wine. Because in the village of Samaniego, nestled in the heart of Rioja Alavesa, an 18th-century inn transformed into the soul of a family winery that today bears the same name: Bodegas Ostatu.

Today, Íñigo, Gonzalo, and Mariasun—three of the six children of Doroteo and María, the founders—are at the helm of this winery that lives in harmony with the rhythm of the vines. Here, the vineyard is not merely work; it is heritage, passion, and destiny.

Speaking of legacy, we cannot overlook one of their most exceptional wines: Ostatu Reserva. Sourced from vineyards over 50 years old, situated on small slopes to the west of Samaniego, where the poor soils—a blend of clay, limestone, and gravel—yield their best under the morning sun. The harvest is conducted by hand, with care. The tempranillo grapes are meticulously selected, gently destemmed without crushing, and fermented for 19 days in small vats at a controlled temperature. Afterwards, the wine is elegantly aged in new French oak barrels for over 16 months.

The result is Ostatu Reserva, a wine with history, character, and that special something that only emerges when wine is crafted at home. Within the family. Like in a good ostatu.

Ostatu Reserva 2019 entices from the very first moment with its deep ruby-red hue. With a vintage rated as excellent, this wine showcases its full aromatic potential from the outset. On the nose, it unveils a symphony of ripe red fruits like cherries and blackberries intertwined with delicate spice notes such as clove, thanks to its meticulous barrel aging.
