About Pazo da Sinsela

Poverty, lack of employment and the search for a better life were reasons enough for a large number of Galicians to emigrate from their home region in the northwest of Spain, to Argentina in search of better economic opportunities between the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. The movement was so massive that the presence of the Galician community in Argentina has left a lasting mark on the country’s culture. So much so that even public figures like Raúl Alfonsín, the first democratically elected president after the last military dictatorship in Argentina, had Galician blood on his paternal grandfather’s side. His family were from Ribadumia, a town in the heart of the Salnés Valley (Pontevedra), where, despite the effects of emigration, the winemaking tradition has remained intact. Rodrigo Mendéz and Raúl Pérez, two renowned Spanish winemakers specialising in the production of Albariño wines, know this very well. Together, they set up a project to recover vineyards located in the parish of this municipality, combining knowledge and passion to showcase the best of the DO Rías Baixas star variety.

This is the origin of Pazo da Sinsela, the winery’s wine of the same name, whose grapes come from a historic pazo (a traditional Galician house) with alluvial silty soils and pebbles that are influenced by the cool Atlantic climate. The grapes are worked in a respectful manner and, once harvested by hand, are immediately taken to the winery. There, with the aim of preserving the qualities of such a special terroir, a spontaneous fermentation is carried out in 1500 litre foudre with native yeasts. The wine is then aged for 12 months, 90% in a 1500-litre fourth-use foudre and 10% in 225-, 300- and 500-litre barrels that have been used multiple times.

The result is Pazo da Sinsela, a fresh, expressive and clean Albariño made as a tribute to the expertise of a Galician winemaking tradition that has remained unchanged over time, despite the comings and goings of its inhabitants.
