About Pegasus Bay Pinot Noir

Pegasus Bay Pinot Noir is an organic single-variety Pinot Noir red wine made by Pegasus Bay in Canterbury (New Zealand).

The Donaldson family established the Pegasus Bay wine project in 1970, influenced by the varieties and methods used in Burgundy (France). Accredited members of the NZWG sustainable viticulture programme, this family are pioneers in the Waipara Valley on New Zealand’s North Island, working with ecological and environmentally friendly methods in both the field and the winery.

Pegasus Bay Pinot Noir comes from vineyards lying at the foot of the Teviotdale Range. These vines are planted in stony and free-draining soil. Sheltered by the mountains, they have natural protection from the strong ocean winds. The team use ecological agriculture without any herbicides or pesticides that could harm the natural balance of the terroir.

In the winery, the Pegasus Bay Pinot Noir grapes are destemmed and kept whole. They are placed in small vats for fermentation at a controlled temperature and with regular pumping over. The wine is then filtered and transferred to separate oak barrels, 30% of which are new. It spends 18 months there. Finally, the coupage is created and the wine is bottled.

Despite being on the other side of the world, Pegasus Bay Pinot Noir is made in a true Burgundy style. A classic wine with the personality and elegance of one of the best terroirs of the Pacific.

2013 Pegasus Bay Pinot Noir 2013 is a smooth red wine with aromas of small red and black fruits with smoky and salty touches. On the palate it is soft, light and very elegant. It reveals a good balance of fruit and wood, with ripe tannins and a persistent finish.
