About Peique El Rapolao Vino de Paraje 2019

Have you ever had the chance to witness the Northern Lights? It is one of the most enthralling and stunning natural phenomena on Earth. An ethereal light display occurring in the polar regions of the Northern Hemisphere, it captivates thousands of tourists with its breathtaking beauty. Similarly, in the realm of oenology, one of the hidden natural treasures increasingly capturing the hearts of enthusiasts is El Rapolao, a distinctive site in the Bierzo region, spanning approximately 26 hectares divided into over 300 plots. Here, eminent viticulturists such as Raúl Pérez, Michelini i Mufatto, Diego Magaña, César Márquez, and Jorge Peique are crafting extraordinary wines. Inspired by the zoning project and the enchantment of this locale, their individual interpretations of the site yield wines that are markedly different and possess a unique character. In the case of Bodegas Peique, a family-run winery situated in the same village as the site, Valtuille de Abajo, they have been committed from the outset to the magnificence of El Rapolao, as evidenced by Peique El Rapolao Vino de Paraje.

Nestled on a slope in Valtuille de Abajo, the vineyard used for Peique El Rapolao Vino de Paraje is noted for its old vines of mencía planted in red clay soils with pebbles, at an altitude of between 520 and 550 meters above sea level. The vineyard is cultivated using organic practices, and the harvest is carried out manually at the optimal point of ripeness. In the winery, the production process begins with the traditional foot-treading of the grapes and the inclusion of 1/3 of the bunches with stems. Fermentation occurs spontaneously with native yeasts in open 500-liter French oak barrels. Subsequently, the wine matures for about 12 months in these same vessels.

As mesmerizing as the dance of lights across the night sky is the discovery of a wine with a distinct identity. Peique El Rapolao Vino de Paraje bears witness to the beauty and complexity of an unparalleled site. A red wine that is fresh, fluid, and profound, demonstrating that when something is truly exceptional, it makes its presence known.

2016

On the nose, it unfurls a spectrum of aromas with strawberries and cherries taking center stage, complemented by a hint of fresh vegetation reminiscent of tomato leaves. Upon tasting, its vivacity is unmistakable, displaying a robust character and a promise to evolve gracefully with time in the bottle. Its passage across the palate is seamless, leaving a lasting and delightful impression.
