About Pelissero Langhe Nebbiolo

Growing a vineyard is neither easy nor cheap. Not only in work and effort, but also in terms of money. According to the Organización Interprofesional del Vino de España (OIVE), which has carried out the study of the average cost of grape production for winemaking in Spain, the average cost is around 3,854.89 euros per hectare.

When it comes to putting your hands in your pockets, it changes the way in which both the vines and the grapes produced are looked at, regardless of their quality, making both ingenuity and imagination for other possibilities much more attractive than getting rid of the grapes (that would be the very last option!). This is true in northern Italy, specifically in the mountainous area of the Langhe (in Piedmont), where the Pelissero winery takes advantage of the Nebbiolo grapes that, because of the vines being young and therefore not good enough to make its Barbaresco wine, are used to make Pelissero Langhe Nebbiolo.

This red wine is made with grapes from the various vineyards that this family has spread across 42 hectares in the municipalities of Treiso, Neive and Barbaresco. In this case, and in very general terms, the vines this wine is made from grow at an altitude of 200-400 metres above sea level and on calcareous, clayey soils with mineral microelements (magnesium, calcium, iron, phosphorus and potassium). Long, cold winters (with frosts), morning fogs and hot, humid summers complete the character of Pelissero Langhe Nebbiolo.

The freshness and character of this variety are maximised in every way during vinification, with short macerations and temperature control. This preserves the varietal aromas. Pelissero Langhe Nebbiolo is finished in barrels (most of them new) and in 50 hL wooden casks after one year. The last two months in the bottle will be essential before it is sold.

Nothing is thrown away here. As the saying goes: waste not want not; and in the case of Pelissero wineries, which are expanding their hectares every year, they have enough material for several years. There will be Pelissero Langhe Nebbiolo for a long time.

2017

Pelissero Langhe Nebbiolo 2017 is a concentrated red wine. The nose is persistent, with notes of fruit that are typical of this wine, like strawberry and raspberry, over a background of eucalyptus, juniper, tobacco, iron and tar. On the palate it is rustic and thick, persistent, with a light tannin (typical of the variety) very rounded by the wood. Persistent and stimulating finish.
