About Penfolds Bin 389 Shiraz Cabernet

Regarded as Australia’s finest red wine, Penfolds Grange is one of the most sought-after wines in the New World. The man behind it, Max Schubert, is known as the person who revolutionised the wine industry in the southern hemisphere. The key to this great project lies in combining the structure of Cabernet Sauvignon with the richness of Syrah. Thanks to this wine, Penfolds has managed to position itself among one of the most reputable and recognised wineries in Australia. But Grange is by no means Penfolds’ only wine. If you want to enjoy these same qualities at a much more affordable price, there is also Penfolds Bin 389 Shiraz Cabernet. Known as “Baby Grange”, mainly because the wine’s components are aged in the same barrels that contained the previous vintage of Grange, it was first made in 1960 by the legendary Max Schuber and is undoubtedly a wine with a style that showcases the wisdom of the blend, emphasising the judicious balance of fruit and oak.

Penfolds Bin 389 Shiraz Cabernet includes fruit from McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway and Wrattonbully. The winemaking process is based on a philosophy of multi-regional blends, where blending different growing soils achieves greater complexity and some continuity across the different vintages. In the winery, after fermenting and macerating with skins, the wine spends 12 months in American oak barrels, 29% of which are new, 50% are 1 year old and the remaining 21% are 2 years old.  

This work has had very good results. Penfolds Bin 389 Shiraz Cabernet stands out for the synergies offered by using different varieties and influenced by the oak it ages in. In short, this wine expresses everything that Penfolds is all about.

Penfolds Bin 389 Shiraz Cabernet 2018 is a concentrated red wine with aromas of blackcurrant and cassis, spicy notes and hints of honey and thyme. The palate is full, rich and enveloping. A mid-palate wine with smooth tannins and a long, persistent finish with subtle hints of vanilla.
