About Pio Cesare Barolo

Pio Cesare Barolo is a wood-aged red wine made by Pio Cesare with the Nebbiolo variety in the DOCG Barolo, in Piedmont (Italy).
 
Founded in 1881, Pio Cesare is a historic winery and a pioneer in recognising the great potential of Langhe wines, with Barolo and Barbaresco as the main representatives. This is currently the only winery still operating in the municipality of Alba and, with always strictly-limited productions, they produce classic wines with a nod to modernity. 
 
Pio Cesare Barolo comes from several family vineyards located in the prestigious terroirs of Serralunga d'Alba, Grinzane Cavour, La Morra, Barolo, Novello, Castiglione Falletto and Monforte. They are cultivated using environmentally friendly agriculture and the harvest is carried out manually when the grapes reach optimum ripeness.
 
When the Pio Cesare Barolo grapes reach the winery, they ferment in stainless steel tanks with one month of contact with the skin. The wine is then transferred to French oak barrels as well as large capacity 20 to 50 hl casks where it ages for three years.
 
Although Pio Cesare Barolo is a classic wine that perfectly describes the excellent quality of Langhe wines, the truth is that the aging process in larger casks gives it a touch of modernity within the Barolo tradition. An honest and direct interpretation of the extraordinary Nebbiolo.
 
2017

Pio Cesare Barolo 2017 is a classic, elegant red wine. The nose is reminiscent of wild berries, cassis, tar, smoke and crushed rose. On the palate it has good structure and expression, with ripe, spiced tannins.

 
2016

Pio Cesare Barolo 2016 is a concentrated red wine with aromas of ripe black fruit, notes of marmalade and balsamic and spicy touches. On the palate it is fine, clean and persistent. A medium-bodied, rich and balanced wine with firm but moderate tannins and a long and persistent finish.
