The sangiovese, foglia tonda, and pugnitello are three indigenous grape varieties emblematic of the municipality of Bolgheri (in the province of Livorno, Tuscany), which have almost vanished from the Italian viticultural landscape. The existence of vineyards with these grapes today is owed to producers like Compañía Agrícola Podere Il Castellaccio, a winery that continues to craft wines from these varietals.
Specifically, this enterprise, rooted in the year 1960 in Castagneto Carducci, is dedicated to restoring and expanding with new plantings the 15 hectares of land (comprising vineyards, olive groves, and forests) currently overseen by Alessandro Scappini, the present owner and the latest generation of the family at the helm of the business. Although he studied agriculture—without ever practicing it—Alessandro allowed his passion to lead him, choosing the more arduous path of reviving the vines planted by his grandfather. This means that, should he succeed, we would be discussing vineyards over 50 years old. And indeed, he has succeeded, yielding from these ancient vines authentic and high-quality wines, unique and irreplaceable, such as Podere Il Castellaccio Valente.
Podere Il Castellaccio Valente is the second wine conceived by Alessandro, born at an altitude of 160 meters on schist soils and under a Mediterranean climate, with mild winters and long summers. With a north/south orientation, this favors the incidence of sunlight thanks to the ample daylight hours. Each variety will ripen in its own time and for this reason, each vine will be harvested and vinified separately. Additionally, fermentation will be carried out using indigenous yeasts in Slovenian oak barrels, followed by a maceration period where the wine will be in contact with the skins and lees for two weeks. This process will help the wine to develop the body and necessary substances to undergo the ageing that Podere Il Castellaccio Valente will complete in wooden barrels and in the bottle prior to its market release.
Podere Il Castellaccio Valente is marketed under the I.G.P. Toscana designation. Its label also features the mark of a wine stain that is poured and leaves an impression. Let this image serve as a warning from Compañía Agrícola Podere Il Castellacio: Take just a simple sip of Podere Il Castellaccio Valente and you will be indelibly marked.
